How to Make a December Birthday Special

For most people, December is a magical month where the cosy nights draw in and Christmas lights illuminate the streets.

But what if your birthday is near – or even on – Christmas day? How do you make a Christmas birthday special, without one of the biggest holidays overshadowing your own celebrations?

This is a question that lots of parents with children born around this time of year have to ask themselves. While many children love the idea of Christmas and receiving presents, it can sometimes water down the excitement that a child may have for their own birthday if they feel like they’re sharing it with the world.

But we’re here to help! As the experts in birthday parties and celebrations, we’ve helped parents all over the UK to celebrate birthdays at every point in the year – even throughout December in the lead-up to Christmas.

5 ways to make a Christmas birthday special

You might find that your child loves the idea of sharing their birthday with Christmas. If that’s the case, then feel free to blend the two events together. Get the Christmas tree up at the start of December, roll out the tinsel, and go wild!

If that isn’t the case, then there are still a number of ways you can celebrate both events in their own time. These include:

  • Start preparing early
  • Hold off on Christmas until the birthday is done
  • Choosing a completely separate theme for the birthday
  • Throw a half-birthday
  • Give as many gifts as you normally would

1) Start preparing earlier than you’d think

Christmas is an incredibly busy time of the year for most people. There’s lots of presents to buy, lots of people to see, and lots to plan in the run-up to the big day.

That’s why if you’re planning a special December birthday, you need to start laying the groundwork further in advance than you might at other times of the year. This can include:

  • Invites. Make sure that you let people know the birthday party is happening as early as possible, so that parents have time to organise their busy December schedules. We’d suggest around two months, as that will build excitement for the party but it isn’t so far away that it’ll be forgotten.
  • Venue. Lots of venues will be booked up for Christmas work parties and events, so it’s a great idea to decide where you’d like to host your December birthday party and get it sorted as soon as possible. This isn’t as much of an issue if you’re hosting the party at home, but for anywhere else, the earlier the better.
  • Entertainment. What’s a party without lots of fun and games? If you’re looking for premium children's entertainment, you’re in the right place. When booking any of our exciting party packages, you’ll be able to view a live tracker of our availability. This helps to plan in advance and make your December birthday party extra special.

2) Hold off on Christmas until the birthday is done

When browsing the high street or supermarkets, it’s not uncommon to see Christmas decorations from September (or even earlier!).

If you’re looking to make a Christmas birthday special, hold off on decorating your full house for Christmas until after their party has passed. You could dedicate a particular room or area of your home as a Christmas-free zone, where the focus is solely on birthday fun.

This will help the birthday boy or girl to feel like they’re the centre of attention – not that they’re having to share their spotlight with other festivities.

3) Choose a completely unique theme for the birthday party

Just because the birthday is taking place in December, doesn’t mean that you need to have a winter wonderland or snow princess party.

One of the best ways to make the December birthday special is to theme your day around anything but Santa Claus and magical snowmen. This could mean a Spook-tacular Halloween party with witches and vampires, or a dinosaur party for prehistoric fun.

4) Throw a half-birthday

If you think that your child’s party might still be overshadowed by December’s festivities – particularly if their actual birthday is on Christmas day – a half-birthday might be the perfect solution.

This involves throwing a party midway through the year, as a mini-celebration of their actual birthday. You can still celebrate in your own way on their birthday, but a half-birthday allows friends and family to come together during the summer months and celebrate without the distractions that Christmas can bring.

This is the perfect time of year for outdoor sports parties, or summery beach parties that may not be as suitable during the cold wintery months.

5) Give as many gifts as you normally would

Whether or not you decide to incorporate any of the above suggestions, one belief is held by all parents who have December children: you can’t split their presents between Christmas and their birthday.

While the temptation might be to share the birthday child’s presents across these dates, it can lead to a resentment of Christmas and problems around fairness – particularly if they have a sibling or relative who receives lots of presents on both their summer-time birthday, and from Santa at Christmas.

This can come down to your personal financial situation, but if possible, treat their birthday as its own separate thing – no matter the time of year.
